Casio EX-ZR200

I bought the Casio EX-ZR200 (a newer version of the EX-ZR100) specifically because of its ability to shoot high-speed video. As far as I know, there are no other digital cameras on the market that can shoot high speed video. Most professional video cameras can not shoot high-speed. Not until you are ready to spend about $15,000 can you get a good high-speed video camera.

Normally, video is shot at about 30 frames per second (FPS) -- this camera can shoot at 120, 240, 480 and 1000 FPS. In addition, it can shoot standard definition and full 1080 HD video at 30 FPS. The video quality and frame size drop as the FPS speed is increased...

  • 120 FPS (1/4 speed) has a frame size of 640x480
  • 240 FPS (1/8 speed) has a frame size of 512x384
  • 480 FPS (1/16 speed) has a frame size of 224x160
  • and 1000 FPS (1/33 speed) has an almost useless frame size of 224x64

When shooting in a high speed mode, good lighting is needed. Natural outdoor lighting is preferred, certain kinds of indoor lighting pulse at 60 Hz and this will show up at the higher frame rates. About 40 seconds into the demo video you will see a moth flying around indoor lights which are pulsing at 60 Hz.

No audio is recorded in the high-speed modes and the camera will not auto-focus or take still picture while recording in high-speed. This all works in the standard and HD modes.

Some additional features of this camera are: panorama with in-camera stitching, High Dynamic Range (HDR) and HDR Art modes that do not require the use of a tripod. It also takes great still pictures and has an impressive 12.5x optical zoom.

Finding this camera is another trick -- it's not sold in the United States. I found mine new on ebay from a seller in Hong Kong for about $325.
